A journalist with a passion for explaining how government affects people’s everyday lives will join The Sacramento Bee to find innovative ways to tell stories and serve as a conduit between the news organization’s journalists and loyal readers.

Kiara Adams, a 2025 graduate of the University of Arizona, has covered state politics in Nevada and Arizona, as well as hyperlocal issues such as environmental equity in Tucson and light pollution on the Las Vegas Strip. Her articles have appeared in several publications, including the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Arizona Luminaria, the Tucson Sentinel and The Nevada Independent.

On April 20, Adams will join The Bee as a Local Engagement & Retention reporter, working alongside Kat Tran, who recently was hired into the same role, and under Samantha Sullivan, McClatchy Media’s California Engagement & Retention Editor. The team’s aim is to serve existing Bee subscribers — and attract new ones — through a mix of reporting, newsletter writing, vertical video production, event organization and staging, and developing new ways to produce and promote journalism.

“I’m excited to join the Bee because I believe this will be a great opportunity for professional and personal growth as I begin my career,” Adams said. “In taking on a brand-new role as one of the Local Engagement & Retention Reporters, I’m excited to bring new ideas to the E&R team and grow this position to better serve readers and even the staff at The Bee.”

Adams is from Las Vegas but was born in Sacramento, where some in her family have lived for years. Outside of journalism, she often discusses books on her Instagram account, tries new coffee shops and restaurants, and does yoga and Pilates.

She said she is looking forward to “reconnecting with Sacramento” and learning all the city has to offer.
