A cafe based in one of Liverpool city centre's most famous and historic buildings has announced its closure. Cafe 1854, located in St George’s Hall, opened its doors in 2023 and was near the visitor entrance on St John's next to James Street Station, Queen’s Square and Lime Street. The cafe, operated by Homebaked Bakery, served tea, coffee, and cake, and featured a book swap.

In a nod to the hall's history, 1854 symbolised the year St George’s Hall opened its doors to the public. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Minton Tiles, usually protected beneath a wooden covering to preserve their intricate craftsmanship, Café 1854’s branding weaved vibrant colours and intricate patterns into its visual identity, paying homage to the hall's architectural significance. Customers could visit the cafe Tuesday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm.

However, a spokesperson for St George’s Hall took to social media yesterday (Friday, March 20) to announce to customers that the cafe had closed its doors. A post on St George’s Hall social media said: “Café 1854 will be closing from today, Friday 20th March 2026.

“We want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported the café and who has visited and enjoyed the space with us over the years.

“St George’s Hall remains open as usual, and we look forward to welcoming you to our events, tours, and exhibitions.

“Please note The Stable Gallery also remains open, and we look forward to welcoming you to explore its exhibitions and creative spaces.

“Thank you again for your continued support.” It is unclear what will replace the former cafe, but a comment from St George’s Hall suggested a new cafe could open in the near future. A comment on the post read: “What a shame.

Is there a new concession going to be running the cafe area anytime soon?” ” to which the account replied: “Yes, hopefully soon.” Ensure our latest news and what's on headlines always appear at the top of your Google search by making us a preferred source.
