Karur SP forms an exclusive women striking force to enhance safety, bring down crime rate

In a move to enhance safety of women and children at thickly populated areas, the Karur police has launched an exclusive women striking force. Twelve women belonging to the Armed Reserve have been drafted for the striking force. It will be headed by a woman sub-inspector, who will report to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Armed Reserve.

The striking force will be positioned at the Karur Bus Stand, schools and colleges, examination centres, busy bus stops, markets, important commercial areas and the places. The members of the force will keep an eye on anti-social elements, who trouble and harass women passengers, shoppers, girls, and passers-by at public places. The police personnel will swing into action if women are harassed.

“The idea is to enhance the safety and security of women at the thickly populated areas and markets. The exclusive women force will be on duty both in the morning and evening,” says D.

N. Harikiran, Superintendent of Police, Karur. The move was aimed at increasing the visibility of police at vulnerable spots. The policewomen had been appraised of the special assignments.

“Visible policing is always helpful for crime prevention. It will help bring down the crime against women,” Mr. Harikiran added. If there was an urgent call for law and order issues in any part of the district, the Superintendent of Police said the personnel of the women striking force would be sent to the problematic areas from the duty spots directly.

Similarly, as part of enhancing vigil in the run up to the Assembly elections, he said that 36 policemen had been drafted for two-wheeler patrolling in the district. The area of their operation had been earmarked. They would visit the allotted areas and interact with the people at common meeting places such as tea stalls, markets and others.

They would collect inputs on suspicious activities of political parties, distribution of cash or gifts to the voters and others. It would enable the police to launch search operation.
