Mount Pleasant dumped out of CONCACAF Champions Cup by Galaxy
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Mount Pleasant were eliminated from the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 after losing to LA Galaxy 0-3 at the National Stadium Thursday night and 0-6 on aggregate.
It was, by and large, a comfortable night for the American team knowing very well the two-legged tie was as good as over from the first leg which they won 3-0 with a hat-trick from Gabriel Pec.
Goals by Jaoa Klauss in the 18th and a brace from Pec in the 62nd and 87th minutes were enough to saw off the Jamaican and Caribbean champions.
Just about 1,765 patrons turned up on a rainy night hoping for a miracle for Mount Pleasant but they were left disappointed as the Los Angeles Galaxy turned in a workmanlike display and ran out easy winners.
Mount Pleasant started with Shaquan Davis, Gadail Irving, Fitzroy Cummings, Demario Phillips, Kyle Ming, Jahshaun Anglin, Alex Marshall, Jabarie Howell, Raheem Edwards, Clifford Thomas and Warner Brown.
Mount Pleasant started brightly, looming sharply, especially Alex Marshall, as they pressed the Galaxy team searching for that all-important first goal to get back in the tie.
But it was Galaxy that got the first chance as Gabriel Pec’s shot was turned away for a corner in the sixth minute.
Then 12 minutes later, the visitors took the lead as Jaoa Klauss of Brazil fired home in the 18th minute, making it 1-0 and 4-0 on aggregate.
It was a deflating goal as the head of the Mount Pleasant players dropped.
However, Warner Brown registered Mount Pleasant’s first shot on goal in the 20th minute, but his effort went wide from just inside the box.
Then defender Fitzroy Cummings headed over from a Demario Phillips’ cross in the 49th minute as they searched for a way back into the tie.
In minute 58, Warner Brown got a glorious chance to get Mount Pleasant on the scoreboard, beating the goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, but fired into the sidenetting with the goal empty.
Galaxy made them pay and doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute as Pec got in behind the defence and slotted home. It was his fourth goal of the tie, having scored all three goals in the first leg.
It was a show of the different pace between the teams as Pec latched onto a through ball and showed tremendous speed before calmly beating the advancing Shaquan Davis in goal.
The 66th minute saw the introduction of former Borussia Dortmund and Germany star Marco Reus to grace the Jamaican turf.
But not many fans inside the stadium would have been aware of his presence, and he made a low-key appearance on Jamaican soil.
The impressive Pec, who was voted man of the match, deservedly put the icing on the cake, tapping home after goalkeeper Davis’ blocked ball fell nicely into his path in the 87th minute.
He scored five of Galaxy’s six goals over the two legs.
