TRELAWNY, Jamaica—Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor C Junior Gager had high commendations for Trelawny students who in recent weeks performed outstandingly in the fields of academics and sports.
Speaking at the regular monthly meeting of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Thursday, Gager lauded members of the Westwood High School for girls, which included Tanay Johnson (captain), Sheanelle Brown, Kadecia Fearon and Alison Francis for making it to the final of the Television Jamaica Schools’ Challenge Quiz where they were edged out by Jamaica College 28-30 in a fiercely contested final.
“I must register our heartiest congratulations to Westwood High School Schools’ Challenge Quiz [team], who for the first time, went to the final and performed remarkably well. Although they placed second, we are still very proud of them for making Trelawny shine on the academic stage. That’s really great,” Gager said.
Turning to sports, he lauded rising track sensation Shanoya Douglas, the Holland High School athlete, who ran 22.11 seconds (1.9m/s) to break her own national junior 200m record at the recent Carifta Games in St George’s, Grenada, securing back-to-back Under-20 sprint double titles after retaining her 100m crown.
“Congratulations are also in order for the Jamaica and Trelawny athlete, Miss [Shanoya] Douglas, a student of Holland High School, who represented Jamaica well at the recently held CARIFTA games,” Gager said.
He noted that at a later date, the municipal corporation has more awards in store for Douglas, who was an awardee at a recent TMC and Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Heroes’ Day Civic and Awards Ceremony held in the historic Water Square in Falmouth.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we will be recognising her again at a later date, to make sure that we help to keep her spirit to continue to grow from strength to strength. She is definitely another top athlete on the rise from Trelawny,” Gager said.
He also commended Sanjay Seymour of William Knibb Memorial High School who stormed to gold in the Boys Under-20 200m final at the Carifta Games.
“Commendations are also in order for Sanjay Seymour and the other athletes from William Knibb Memorial High School, who also made it to and did well at the Carifta Games. We wish them all the best in their endeavors,” Gager said.
