A Gen Z woman’s story explaining why she is choosing to remain single has sparked debate online, after she shared a tale of betrayal, heartbreak and personal reflection.

In a video posted to TikTok, Lana (@lanaisaaa) recounted her first experience of being in love at age 21, describing a relationship with a former coworker that quickly unraveled. But what began as an exciting connection soon turned complicated when she discovered he was messaging another woman while seeing her.

She said she sought advice from a trusted coworker, only to later learn that she had also been involved with him behind Lana's back. The revelation, she said, left her questioning her self-worth and struggling emotionally for months.

In her video, she described being lied to and “gaslit” before the relationship ended abruptly over text.

“This situation was so crazy and awful that it doesn’t even seem real,” she wrote in a caption accompanying the same video on YouTube Shorts, adding that the experience was a “final straw” after a childhood marked by instability and difficult relationships. Now, she says she has chosen to stay single, telling viewers that her decision is not solely based on one relationship but a broader pattern of feeling hurt by people close to her. She described finding peace in solitude and prioritizing herself over romantic connections.

The video has since been viewed more than 600,000 times, with many TikTok users weighing in on her decision via the comments. While many were shocked at her story, others questioned whether one relationship should shape long-term choices.

“Girl, if we based long-term decisions on first relationships or heartbreak,

No One

would be together! There are good people out there!” ” one TikTok user commented. Another wrote, “The twist at the end where Kyle and Kim end up together, I never saw that coming!

Total betrayal! Sorry that stuff like that happens to nice people like you.” Letting Go of Resentment Others focused on her current lifestyle aside from romantic partnerships, with one contributor saying: “Staying single is peaceful, but I highly recommend finding friends again.”

Lana has since said she no longer harbors resentment toward those involved and believes the breakup ultimately benefited her. She described feeling emotionally detached from the relationship now and said the experience helped her recognize what she wants for herself moving forward. Her story arrives as more Americans are living without partners.

Stepping Away from Dating According to the Pew Research Center, “In 2019, roughly four-in-10 adults ages 25 to 54 (38%) were unpartnered,” reflecting a long-term shift in relationship trends. The same report notes that “this share is up sharply from 29 percent in 1990,” highlighting a growing acceptance of single lifestyles. Psychological research also suggests that stepping away from dating after a breakup can be beneficial.

“Moving on does not mean jumping into another relationship,” according to Psychology Today.

“It means reconnecting with yourself completely and allowing yourself to evolve and learn something new about who you are now.” Lana's story continues to circulate across social media, reflecting ongoing conversations among young people about relationships, trust and the choice to prioritize independence over dating.
