Now 54 years later, reggae artiste Nesbeth (who was not yet born when the O’Jays scored their hit) has released an emotionally charged song titled Back Stabber, a different recording, which speaks about betrayal, fake friendships and personal growth.

“This song didn’t come from one moment,” Nesbeth told Observer Online on Saturday. “It came from repeated real-life experiences. I realise that a lot of people go through the same thing, so I turned that feeling into music.”

The song serves multiple purposes — therapy, warning and message. Emotionally raw and direct, the intensity heard on the track is genuine, shaped by emotions that poured directly into the recording process.

“I wasn’t just recording — I was venting. You can’t fake that kind of energy,” Nesbeth disclosed.

Produced by Nesbeth and released through his Treble Fitz Productions label, Back Stabber marks a defining point in the reggae artiste’s journey. It reflects increased awareness, maturity and a more intentional approach to both music and personal relationships.

While betrayal is a recurring issue personally, Nesbeth avoids naming names.

“No faces, no names. If the shoe fits, they’ll wear it. This is bigger than one person. Not everybody around you is for you. I forgive, but I move differently now. Peace matters, but so does knowing who deserves access to you,” Nesbeth argued.

Nesbeth is best known for the hits Drive By, My Dream and Success Story.
