Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor C Junior Gager, formally recognized Trelawny students for their recent achievements in academics and sports during the monthly meeting of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation on Thursday. The mayor highlighted the performance of the Westwood High School girls team, which reached the final of the Television Jamaica Schools Challenge Quiz. The team, consisting of captain Tanay Johnson, Sheanelle Brown, Kadecia Fearon, and Alison Francis, finished as runners-up after a 28-30 loss to Jamaica College.

Gager noted that this was the first time the school had reached the final stage of the competition. I must register our heartiest congratulations to Westwood High School Schools Challenge Quiz team, who for the first time, went to the final and performed remarkably well. Although they placed second, we are still very proud of them for making Trelawny shine on the academic stage, Gager stated during the meeting.

In the realm of athletics, the mayor praised Holland High School student Shanoya Douglas for her performance at the Carifta Games in St Georges, Grenada. Douglas set a new national junior record in the 200m with a time of 22.11 seconds and successfully defended her 100m title to secure back-to-back Under-20 sprint doubles. Congratulations are also in order for the Jamaica and Trelawny athlete, Miss Douglas, a student of Holland High School, who represented Jamaica well at the recently held CARIFTA games, Gager remarked.

The municipal corporation intends to honor Douglas again in the future to support her continued development as an athlete. She was previously recognized at a joint ceremony held by the Trelawny Municipal Corporation and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission in Falmouth.

Additionally, Gager commended Sanjay Seymour of William Knibb Memorial High School for winning gold in the Boys Under-20 200m final at the Carifta Games.
