A farmer was left totally bemused after digging up a creepy root vegetable which looks just like a human hand. The uncanny veg was discovered on a farm in China's Guangdong Province, gobsmacking locals who quickly uploaded snaps onto Chinese social media sites. Pictures of the hand-shaped yam sparked a total meltdown online , with veg obsessives reportedly travelling to the farm in order to see it for themselves.

Some wealthier fans of the yam weren't just content with seeing the so-called hand of gourd, with Chinese media reporting that multiple bids were submitted to buy it.

According to news outlet South China Morning Post, the inundated farmer rejected offers of 8,000 yuan, or just under £900. The yam, which many online admitted to thinking was part of a corpse, sparked debate, with some calling the find "creepy" while others argued that such discoveries were "good luck".

“At first, I thought it was a human hand and was startled,” and “I was creeped out thinking it might be part of a corpse" one user wrote.
“Its rare shape seems like a symbol of good luck", another declared. Another user seemed impressed by the hand's appearance, noting that they thought the yam might have had 'a manicure'. Experts commenting on the phenomenon have been clear that the shape is not supernatural and instead is nothing more than a coincidence.

Yams are root vegetables that grow underground, and are therefore often required to grow in different directions to avoid hard soil, stones and surrounding plants, often splitting their roots to do so. These splits can often cause limb or finger like appearances. In 2015, a farmer from China's Zhongjiang County made headlines after discovering a massive hand-shaped yam in his garden.

The farmer, named Mr Chen, reportedly kept the 70cm veg to himself, turning it into a soup.

According to reports , he wasn't able to finish the soup himself, and so called on his relatives to give him a hand. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star,
