WPM Aims to Contain Smoke at Montego Bay Landfill by Friday

A fire at the Retirement Disposal site in Montego Bay has been the source of a smoke nuisance affecting several communities. The incident was first reported last Saturday, leading to significant smoke plumes across the area. Western Parks and Markets (WPM), the regional arm of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), is currently working to fully contain the smoke.

According to Dramaine Jones, Regional Manager for WPM, the fire itself has been contained, but smoke has persisted in the days following the initial outbreak. Jones stated, "

The rains on Thursday managed to contain the remaining flames and some of the smoke. However we are hopeful to completely deal with the smoke nuisance by Friday afternoon." WPM officials initially hoped to contain the situation by Friday, contingent on favorable weather conditions.

The source of the smoke has been identified as two sections of the landfill containing debris from the NSWMA's Debris Management Programme and bulky waste collections. WPM has faced challenges in addressing the situation, primarily due to weather conditions. Afternoon rains created extremely soggy ground, making access difficult for trucks and equipment.

To mitigate these challenges, WPM adjusted its operations to begin earlier in the day. This allowed crews to take advantage of sunlight and work more effectively before the ground became saturated. Jones explained that this adjustment has allowed them to make progress despite the difficult conditions.

As of Friday, WPM reported significant progress in containing the smoke. The area initially affected covered approximately one acre, with 35-45 percent of it producing smoke. Current estimates indicate that smoke emission has been reduced to approximately 25 percent of the original amount.

WPM plans to cover the affected area as part of its ongoing management strategy. The site had already been flattened in preparation for covering, and the focus is now on applying the necessary cover material. Jones indicated that the preparation work was already completed prior to the fire.

The ongoing efforts aim to minimize the impact of the smoke on residents in the surrounding areas. WPM is collaborating with the fire department to ensure the situation is fully resolved. The agency is hopeful for complete containment by Friday afternoon, pending continued favorable conditions.

Jones revealed that the operational adjustments have been effective in addressing the challenges posed by the terrain and weather. The team continues to monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed to ensure the complete elimination of the smoke nuisance.
