Jackie Fielder is going through an acute personal health crisis right now and we are not at liberty to share details, but we appreciate the support people have given us and are proud of her for taking care of herself," Jennifer Ferrigno, a legislative aide, said in a statement. A spokesman for Mayor Daniel Lurie could not be reached for comment after the close of regular business hours Friday. Fielder, a former San Francisco State University teacher who has described herself as "a Latina renter and Democratic Socialist," also represents the Portola and Bernal Heights neighborhoods in District 9.

Fielder's official biography describes her as a former city commissioner and climate and environmental justice advocate.

In 2017, she co-founded the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition to start a city-owned bank to support small businesses. Responding to the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline, she also co-founded the San Francisco Defund DAPL Coalition. From 2018 to 2020, Fielder taught "

Race, Women, and Class" at San Francisco State University in the College of Ethnic Studies. From November 2021 to March 2024, she served as commissioner and vice chair of the San Francisco Local Agency Formation Commission, overseeing Clean Power SF. Before becoming a supervisor, Fielder was co-director of Stop the Money Pipeline, a national coalition and campaign focused on disrupting the flow of money to fossil fuel companies where she worked on climate financial regulation.

A graduate of Stanford University, she describes herself as the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and Native American grandparents and a citizen of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota, with Two Kettle Lakota and Hidatsa descent.
