Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr Latest News, News March 25, 2026 Jamaica takes leadership role on ageing and employment KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica is strengthening its role in regional discussions on ageing and labour policy as Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr, participates in a major social security forum in Brazil.

Jamaica takes leadership role on ageing and employment

In a release, the ministry said Charles Jr is in São Paulo, Brazil, attending the International Social Security Association Regional Social Security Forum for the Americas, scheduled for March 25 to 27, 2026. The forum brings together ministers, policymakers and social security leaders from across the region to examine emerging trends and policy responses within social protection systems, with particular focus on demographic change, labour market participation and inclusive economic growth. Charles Jr will represent Jamaica on a high-level plenary panel addressing population ageing and employment, an area of increasing national and regional importance.

Jamaica is undergoing a significant demographic transition, with projections indicating that by 2050, approximately 27.5 per cent of the population will be aged 60 and over. The ministry said the engagement reflects the Government’s continued focus on strengthening Jamaica’s social protection framework and ensuring policies remain responsive to evolving labour market realities. It added that the participation will also support ongoing efforts to promote economic participation, dignity and inclusion for older Jamaicans, while positioning the country as an active contributor to regional and international dialogue on social protection and labour policy.
